Raiders close weekend with second victory over Dayton

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team wrapped up a perfect 3-0 weekend in the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational with a four-set victory over Dayton Saturday night in the Raiders second win over the Flyers in three days.

Wright State (8-3) won the first, third and fourth sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) with the only blip coming in the second set when Dayton (6-7) recorded a 25-20 set win.

The Raiders now get set to move into Horizon League action, with the conference slate beginning next weekend with a pair on the road for Wright State at Cleveland State and Oakland next Friday and Saturday.

Against Dayton, Callie Martin recorded her fourth double-double of the season with an 11 kill, 23 dig night, while Taylor Bransfield led the Raiders with 12 kills and six blocks. Seiler Hruska followed up her eight kill performance earlier Saturday morning with seven kills against the Flyers, while Jenna Story (18) and Jenny Morey (13) joined Martin with double digit blocks. Lainey Stephenson passed out 43 of the Raiders' 48 assists.

SET ONE
Back-and-forth early, Wright State used a 5-2 run to take a 13-11 advantage, only to see Dayton respond with four straight points to regain the lead. From there, it was a set of runs, with the Raiders rolling off five straight points behind kills from Bransfield and Stephenson before Dayton tallied three straight of its own to pull back within one. Wright State closed the set with four of the final six points thanks to a trio of attacking errors and a final kill from Bransfield.

SET TWO
Both sides traded points throughout, never gaining more than a two- or three-point advantage until the closing moments. After a Bransfield kill knotted the set at 18-all, Dayton recorded the next four points to push ahead. Back-to-back kills from Aaliyah Byers and Ott temporarily halted the momentum, but the visitors closed the set with three straight points.

SET THREE
The Raiders came out hot, recording five of the first six points thanks to three kills from Hruska, and later lead 9-3 and 13-6 as they continued to extend the advantage to 18-9. Dayton rolled off five straight points to pull back within four at 18-14 but Wright State regained some cushion after tallying four of the following five points and cruised to the end of the set.

SET FOUR
Wright State had a pair of early three-point runs but couldn't distance itself until a 4-1 spurt pushed the advantage to 13-7. Dayton responded with a 4-1 run of its own to pull to within 14-11 before the sides traded points in the middle of the set. The Raiders closed the night with six of the final nine points thanks in part to four errors by Dayton in the closing moments.
