DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team took the opening set on Saturday afternoon before visiting Cincinnati took the next three sets and the Raiders fell 3-1 in the final match of the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational.
Wright State (4-7) jumped out with a 25-14 first set win before Cincinnati (7-3) responded with the following sets by 25-16, 25-23 and 25-21 set scores.
The Raiders now turn their attention to Horizon League play, which begins on the road Tuesday night at Robert Morris before Wright State hosts Northern Kentucky next Saturday at 4 p.m. inside McLin Gymnasium.
Wright State, who finished the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational 1-1, saw three players earn tournament honors –
Callie Martin,
Katie Meyer and
Jenny Wessling, with Martin nabbing tournament MVP honors. Martin finished the two matches with 19 kills, 20 digs and five blocks, while Meyer had 71 assists (10.14 assists/set) and 20 digs and Wessling recorded 46 digs, a 6.57 digs/set average.
Saturday,
Sam Ott finished with a match-best 12 kills, while
Megan Alders was also in double figures with 10 digs of her own. Meyer collected a double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs as Martin just missed a double-double of her own with 12 digs and nine kills. Wessling collected a match-best 23 digs as well.
SET ONE
Wright State jumped ahead early in the set with five of the first seven points and led 13-7 before a six-point run thanks to kills from Alders and Byers, along with a trio of Cincinnati errors. The Raiders later closed the set the way they started it, tallying five of the final seven points behind kills from Meyer, Ott and Zegunis.
SET TWO
Back-and-forth in the early going, Cincinnati gained some breathing room with a 5-1 run to take a 16-10 advantage. Wright State responded with four of the next five points before Cincinnati closed the set with eight of the final 10 points for a 25-16 set win.
SET THREE
Cincinnati tallied six of the first eight points and later led 15-6 and 20-10 before the Raiders pulled back into the set. Wright State rallied off a 12-1 run to take a 22-21, thanks to kills from Alders, Ott, Zegunis and
Elena Dubuc. Cincinnati used back-to-back points to regain a 23-22 lead before the Raiders used a kill from Dubuc to again tie the score. Cincinnati again responded, this time to close the set, using a Raider error and a service ace to close the set 25-23.
SET FOUR
The lead went back-and-forth through the middle of the set before Cincinnati rolled off seven straight points to take a 19-15 lead. Wright State scored three of the next four points behind a pair of kills from Ott before Cincinnati pushed to match point with four straight points. The Raiders rolled off three straight points thanks to kills from Alders and Byers before Cincinnati wrapped things up from there, using a final Raider error for the 25-21 set win.
