ROCHESTER, MI – Though they held the lead a majority of the night, the Wright State women's basketball team was unable to close out in double-overtime, falling to Oakland 84-82 in the Thursday night matchup.
Wright State will now shift their focus to wrapping up Horizon League regular season play this Saturday afternoon at Detroit Mercy (March 2).
Holding an eight-point lead going into the fourth, Wright State (16-14, 10-9 Horizon) allowed Oakland (12-15, 8-11 Horizon) to tie the game in the final two minutes, sending the matchup into double-overtime, where the Raiders' four double-digit scorers were not enough to overpower the Golden Grizzlies.
The Raiders took an early lead with a jumper in the paint by Jada Tate in the first quarter, leading 9-8. The lead continued to grow, holding a 33-28 lead at the half. Wright State saw their largest lead of the night in the third quarter as Alexis Hutchison passes a steal over to Rachel Loobie, for a 13-point advantage, 43-30.
The first of two overtimes showed many shots on the line for Wright State, as they put up six of their eight points on free throws, the other two with a layup by Kacee Baumhower. In the final overtime, the Raiders played catch-up as Oakland held the lead until a three-pointer by Hutchison tied the game at 79 with just over a minute left. With 25 seconds left, Hutchison made another three, narrowing Oakland's lead to one. However, the Raiders couldn't regain the lead as the Golden Grizzlies scored a free throw, concluding the night with a score of 84-82.
Hutchison led the Raiders with 29 points, shooting 52.3 percent from the floor, with four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Baumhower also saw double digits, putting up 17 points while recording a team high of five assists. Alongside the two was Lauren Scott with 13 points, and Loobie with 11. Loobie and Layne Ferrell co-led Wright State with eight rebounds.
After shooting 61.5 percent in the first, the Raiders finished shooting 47.5 percent overall (29-of-61) and 47.1 percent from the three (8-of-17). Wright State held Oakland to 31.3 percent overall in the second, as they shot 46.6 percent overall (34-of-73) on the night. The Golden Grizzlies only sunk two from deep, going 2-of-19 for three (10.5 percent).
Oakland had three double-digit scorers, being led by Linda Van Schaik with 31 points. Following her was Brooke Quarles-Daniels with 21 points, and Markyia McCormick with ten.
