Espinal-Elvir Scores for Third Straight Game in Win at Saint Francis

LORETTO, Pennsylvania – The Wright State men's soccer team adds their second victory to the 2024 season after defeating Saint Francis on Sunday afternoon. Goals from Brian Burkett, Edwin Espinal-Elvir, and Felix Ezekwuka gave the Raiders their 3-1 win over SFU.
Wright State (2-1-0) bested Saint Francis (1-2-0) in shots on goal, 6-5, and saves, 4-3, but were bested in shots attempted, 10-9, and corner kicks 10-3. Cole Werthmuller led the Raiders with three shots, one on goal, followed by Espinal-Elvir's two shots. Goalkeeper Joel Shaw ended the day with four saves, allowing one goal. Four Raiders – Zakaria Amro, Jack Jenkins, Brock Pickett, and Shaw – logged all 90 minutes of play.
Wright State took an early advantage, as Espinal-Elvir capitalized on a defensive error, intercepting a pass between a Red Flash defender and goalkeeper, sinking his third goal of the season in the eighth minute.
The Raiders held a 1-0 lead at the half, as SFU added five shots, three on goal, but were held off by Shaw with three saves in the first 45 minutes.
SFU tied the match quickly in the second half, as Joschi Schelb scored the Red Flash's loan goal on a penalty kick in the 56th minute. The score stayed tied for nearly 20 minutes of play, but WSU regained the advantage in the 73rd minute as Henry Hutchinson battled to deliver a pass to Ezekwuka, who sunk it into the bottom left corner.
The Raiders were not yet finished, pushing to cement their victory in the last minutes. The final goal came in the 85th minute as freshman midfielder Brian Burkett sped down the field. Though momentarily disrupted by an SFU defender, he quickly regaining control and slipped the ball past the goalkeeper, sinking his first collegiate goal.
The Raiders will play again on Thursday, September 5 at 8:30 p.m., staying on the road as they travel to Chicago, Illinois to take on Loyola Chicago. Fans can keep up with the non-conference matchup on ESPN+ or through live stats.
