DAYTON – The Wright State men's soccer team is now 2-0-1 in the Horizon League after defeating Purdue Fort Wayne in a shutout win. The four Raider goals came from Brian Burkett, Felix Ezekwuka, Henry Hutchinson, and Cole Werthmuller.
The Raiders (5-3-2, 2-0-1 HL) outshot PFW (5-3-1, 2-1-0 HL) 7-6, with both teams putting five shots on target. WSU had five saves to PFW's one, while the Mastodons tallied five corner kicks to the Raider's one.
Leading the Raiders seven shots was Werthmuller, putting up two. Burkett, Ezekwuka, Uleto Fuentes, Hutchinson, and Giorgos Petoussis each had one shot. Joel Shaw added to his now 4-1-1 record, allowing no goals while tallying three saves. Zakaria Amro, Keegan Conley, Brock Pickett, Samuel Rudjord, and Shaw all logged 90 minutes of play.
WSU put up three shots in the first half, first by Fuentes in the 34th minute. Werthmuller logged both of his shots in the first 45, first with an unassisted goal in the 39th minute, and later in the 43rd minute. Shaw logged all three of his saves in the first half, preventing 'Dons goal in the fourth, ninth, and 28th minutes.
The Raiders got off to a quick start in the second, with their second goal coming just five minutes into the half. Moving to 2-0, Rudjord passed to Ezekwuka, who found the bottom left corner of the net in the 50th minute. Not long after, Conley made a quick interception, passing the ball to Hutchinson to score in the lower left in the 54th minute. Petoussis added his shot in the 58th minute.
The night slowed, and WSU went shot less for nearly the rest of the game, but the night was not yet over as Burkett raised the Raider's uncontested lead to four in the 88th minute. Burkett's goal came as he quickly reacted to a misplay by a 'Dons defender and goalkeeper, intercepting a pass in midfield and scoring with a clear shot at the completely unguarded goal.
The Raiders will play again next Saturday, staying home to host Green Bay. The 1 p.m. match will have live stats provided. Fans are encouraged to watch the game in-person with free admission and Souvenir Saturday giveaways.
