Vaughn’s Late Goal Propels Raiders past Jaguars

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- The Wright State women's soccer team remains undefeated in Horizon League play after defeating IU Indy 3-2 courtesy of an 82nd-minute goal by Ashley Vaughn.

Wright State (6-5, 3-0) will return home to Alumni Field on Sunday, September 28, as the Oakland Golden Grizzlies come to Dayton. First touch is slated for 3 p.m. and fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items as part of the Raider Food Pantry drive.

The Raiders opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Samara Nunn dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box past multiple Jaguars defenders before laying the ball off to Makenzie Chinn, who took a touch and slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Nunn would double the Wright State lead in the 30th minute. The senior would intercept a sloppy pass in the IU Indy backline, dribble around the Jaguars' goalie, and place the ball into the back of the net.

Wright State's ongoing shutout streak would come to a close in the 38th minute when Lindsey Castillo sent a long-range shot that snuck under the crossbar and into the back of the net. The streak ended at 437 minutes of match time.

IU Indy would come out of the halftime break with a lot of energy and would score the equalizer in the 64th minute. Caroline Kelly played a pass up to JoJo Murphey, who chipped the ball over the head of Sarka in goal to level the score at two goals apiece.

The Raiders would get the winner in the 82nd minute when Caitlin Burger sent a corner kick into the box for Chinn, who headed the ball onto Vaughn, who volleyed the ball off a Jaguars' defender and into the back of the net.

In the box score, the Raiders led in shots (18-15), shots on goal (8-6), and corner kick opportunities (5-2). Kiera Sarka faced 15 shots and recorded four saves.
