Sean McCaffrey was named the head men's and women's tennis coach at Wright State on September 24, 2008.
Overall, McCaffrey posted his 100th win as the Wright State head coach and 200th overall as a head coach in the 2012-13 campaign. FOr the men, Hayden Joblin and Lauri Makikalli were named first-team all league while Kayla Tuscany was selected to the second team for the women.
The 2011-12 year was one of the best in WSU men's tennis history as they won the Horizon League regular season title at 7-0 (18-5 overall) and McCaffrey was named the Horizon League and the Wright State Coach of the Year--a first for WSU since 2001. McCaffrey also boasted four players who received All-Horizon League Honors, including Martin Arguello as the Player of the Year.
McCaffrey led the Midwest Mustangs U16 Boys and Girls teams to the USTA Junior Zone Team Championship in St. Louis in late July 2012.
Improvement has always been part of Coach McCaffrey's way as the women finished 14-10 and 5-3 in the Horizon League and the men finished 17-10 and 5-2 in 2010-11. For his efforts he was named WSU's co-Coach of the Year along with Raider baseball coach Rob Cooper. In 2010-11, Kayla Tuscany received second-team Horizon League honors while Jan Alafriz picked up first-team honors.
The 2009-10 campaign saw both Raider squads rank among the most improved teams in the country. On the men's side, WSU went 15-9 (.625) after posting a 5-16 (.238) mark in 2008-09. The .387 improvement led all Division I teams, with the College of Charleston finishing second at .360 (16-4 from 11-14). The women finished 9-13 (.409) this season after going 3-18 (.143) in 2008-09. The .266 improvement was second in Division I behind Charleston Southern at .397 (17-4 from 7-10).
Senior Nick Camilleri, who was chosen First Team All-Horizon League, was selected as one of two recipients of Wright State's Don Mohr Male Athete of the Year Award and also received the Michael Cusack LifeSkills Award. Freshman Tore Waldhausen was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year.
McCaffrey came to WSU from Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire, where he was the women's tennis coach for five seasons and the men's coach for three. The TCCC women's tennis Coach of the Year in fall 2008, he led the Chargers to a 15-0 overall record and a 10-0 mark in the TCCC after Colby-Sawyer went 12-2 overall in 2007-08 along with a 8-1 conference mark and a trip to the semifinal round of the TCCC tournament. During his tenure at Colby-Sawyer, the women went 65-18 overall and 38-9 in conference play.
As the men's coach, McCaffrey led the Chargers to two conference championship match appearances while posting a 40-17 overall record and 21-4 mark in league play.
McCaffrey also served as the general manager and head professional of Our Court Tennis in White River Junction, Vermont.
Prior to Colby-Sawyer, McCaffrey spent nine seasons as the head boys tennis coach at Hanover High School in Hanover, New Hampshire. At Hanover, McCaffrey compiled a 132-20 record and led his team to a Class I state championship in the spring of 2004.
Over his coaching career, McCaffrey has been honored with several awards including 2000 USPTA New England High School Coach of the Year and a National Honorable Mention High School Coach of the Year. He was also named 2004 New England Division Coach of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association and in the spring of 2005, he was selected to participate in the USA Tennis High Performance Tennis Coaching program in Park City, Utah.
McCaffrey is a 2007 graduate of Johnson State with a B.S. degree in General Studies and a concentration in History. He earned an associate degree in recreation and leisure management from Johnson & Wales University in 1995 where he served as team captain in 1994 and the following year was a player/coach who helped lead the Wildcats to an 11-1 record. McCaffrey previously attended Adirondack Community College where he was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1991 team that went 12-2 and finished as the runner-up at the New York State Junior College tournament.
McCaffrey and his wife Deborah have two daughters, Cora and Maddie.
