Adrian Townsend was named an assistant coach at Wright State in early July, 2006 and hit the ground running and recruiting under first-year head coach Brad Brownell.
As an assistant coach at EMU from 2002-05, Townsend's major responsibility was the recruitment of high school and junior college players from the Midwest, especially in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Also included in his duties were practice and game coaching, monitoring academic progress, community involvement and summer basketball camps.
The 38-year-old Townsend was a four-year standout basketball player at California University of Pennsylvania from 1986-90, under then-head coach Jim Boone. He was the team's Most Valuable Player and an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) selection in 1990. He established a single-season school record for assists with 227. He completed his bachelor's degree in 1991.
A native of Pittsburgh, Townsend was an outstanding high school player at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart where he earned All-Section honors in basketball and was a member of the Fabulous 22, the team of top high school players chosen by The Pittsburgh Press-Gazette. Townsend received an ultimate honor last year after being inducted into his high school athletic hall of fame.
He began his coaching career as a student assistant at California-PA in 1990-91 and served as a graduate assistant coach from 1991-93.
From California (PA), Townsend moved on to Mansfield University of Pennsylvania as an assistant coach from 1993-94 and then joined the St. Francis (PA.) basketball staff as an assistant coach in 1994-95.
Townsend was also the Director of Basketball Operations at Duquesne in 2001-02 and has held financial and computer-related positions in the private sector as well. He and his wife, Melanie, are the proud parents of Adrian, Jr., age 12, and Adriel, age 2.
