Victor Ebong

  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Wright State University head basketball coach Brad Brownell dipped into his past to select assistant coach Victor Ebong. Ebong played for the Raider head coach when he was an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington and the two have kept in close contact ever since. A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Ebong proved to be a standout garnering Metro Conference Player of the Year and All-State awards.

Ebong ultimately chose to play his college ball for the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington and head coach Jerry Wainwright from 1996-2000. He was a member of the school's first ever post-season team in 1998 which posted UNCW's first 20-win season. As team captain in 2000, he anchored a hard-nosed, nationally-ranked defense as the senior was selected to the Colonial Athletic Association's All-Defensive team. The 2000 team marched through the CAA tournament, beating Richmond in the final 59-49 and securing Wilmington's first NCAA Tournament berth. In a loss to Cincinnati in the first round, Ebong was named Chevrolet Player of the Game, scoring 15 points with three three-pointers and six rebounds.

"Vic always impressed me with his basketball knowledge and passion for the game," Brownell said. "Having played at UNCW, he clearly understands the system and has already been a tremendous asset to our players."

After graduating from UNCW, Ebong played one year professionally in Ireland and Sweden. After a short stint in Ireland, he was traded to the "Atomics" of Oskarshamn in the Swedish League. Ebong led the previously losing ball club to the semi-finals of the playoffs. He averaged 23.1 points per game and 11.7 rebounds before returning to North Carolina to pursue other endeavors.

Excelling as a high-performing sales rep with GlaxoSmithKline and Merck pharmaceuticals, Ebong kept his basketball acumen sharp coaching AAU basketball in and around the Charlotte, North Carolina area. Additionally, he showed great promise as color commentator for the Seahawks' television games on Comcast/Fox Sportsnet.

Ebong's two brothers, Ben and Francis, played basketball collegiately at Navy and Davidson while his sister, Nne, has recently been named Vice President of ABC Studios.

Ebong, who has his undergraduate degree in Accounting, is currently finishing his MBA at Wright State's Raj Soin School of Business.
