Tyler Johnston was named the assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach in August 2016.
During the 2015-16 season, Johnston served as the volunteer assistant coach for both programs and helped guide the women’s program to a 20-9 season record and their first-ever Horizon League Conference final.
Before arriving at WSU, Johnston was the head men’s tennis coach at nationally ranked Vincennes University. In his first season, Johnston took the Trailblazers from a preseason NJCAA national ranking of 25 to a year-end national ranking of 6 and posted a 19-6 overall season record. Johnston recruited and coached two players who received ITA All-American accolades.
Spending his first two years of college in the NJCAA, Johnston was nationally ranked in the top 20 in the country in both singles and doubles. A 2014 graduate of Ohio Dominican University with a degree in Sport Management, Johnston was a two-time captain and played #1 doubles and #1 singles for the nationally-ranked Panthers in Division II. He helped lead the way to Ohio Dominican’s first ever NCAA Tournament bid any sport, was an ITA Academic Award Winner and was the 2014 Ohio Dominican University “Male Pride of The Panther” award recipient.
A Wilmington, Ohio, native, Johnston holds the all-time record for #1 singles wins at Wilmington High School. He was selected as the Dayton Area Co-Player of The Year in 2009 and was twice named the Fort Ancient Valley Conference Player of the Year. A Division I OHSAA State Qualifier, Johnston was later inducted into the Wilmington High School Sports Hall of Fame.
