The All-Horizon League Golf Team was announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office and Wright State had three players were recognized. Senior Jesse Hutchins was selected as the Horizon League Player of the Year, fellow senior John Schones joined Hutchins on the all-league team and sophomore Marty Miller was chosen as one of two Newcomers of the Year. Head coach Fred Jefferson rounded out the
WSU honorees as he was picked as the Coach of the Year.
Hutchins led the Raiders with a 73.4 stroke average. He shot a season-best 64 as he won the Xavier Invitational with a 201 (68-69-64) and finished second at the Horizon League Championship with a 216 (70-69-77). Hutchins, who had just two rounds over 80 the entire season and nine over 75, also placed third at the Western Carolina Invitational, tied for fourth at the Morehead State Invite and was fifth at Ball State. Hutchins, who was honored by the league in 2001 and 2002, is now part of an elite group of 13 players as three-time all-league selections.
Schones was second on the team with a 73.6 average, including two rounds of 69 to win the Bowling Green Invitational. Finishing in a tie for third at the Horizon League Championship with a 217 (70-75-72), Schones was the top league performer at the Bullock Collegiate Classic as he tied for third with a 219 (73-76-70). He had just rounds over 80 this year and seven over 75. With this year's honor, Schones is just the third league player to be selected all-league all four years and is the first since 1989.
Miller, a transfer from Miami-Middletown, was third on the squad with a 75.4 average. He placed sixth at the Horizon League Championship with a 219 (73-74-72) and finished in a tie for fourth at the Shootout at Burning Ridge.
Jefferson tied a record for most Coach of the Year honors as 2003 marks the fourth time he has received the honor (2000, 1997, 1996). It is fifth such honor overall for Jefferson as he was the Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year in 1993. Along with the Horizon League
title and an upcoming third trip to the NCAA Division I Regionals in May, Jefferson guided the Raiders to five other top three finishes, including the Xavier Invitational crown.
Wright State will find out on Monday, May 5, where it will be heading for the NCAA Regionals May 15-17.
