The Wright State volleyball team had to battle from behind the entire night, facing a one-game deficit twice and trailed 5-0 in the decisive fifth game, but the Raiders rallied each time to eventually post a victory over Horizon League co-leader UIC Friday night at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium. WSU won the match 34-36, 30-21, 18-30, 30-28, 15-11.
Game one was tight throughout with 15 ties and six lead changes. Wright State looked to be in good shape as a Jenny Schultz ace gave the Raiders a 29-27 lead, but two UIC kills evened the score and it was back and forth until the Flames took advantage of two WSU attack error to claim the game.
Wright State, who hit .296 in the opening game, continued its strong hitting in taking game two, hitting .289 compared to .065 for the Flames. The Raiders jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage and never looked back.
The tables, though, were turned in game three as UIC tallied the final six points to win going away. The Flames hit an impressive .475 in that one to .091 for Wright State.
Game four was another tight affair with 11 ties and three lead changes. A Schultz kill followed by a Samantha Connor ace broke a 23-all deadlock to put the Raiders in front to stay and after back-to-back kills from Katerina Hanackova closed the margin to 29-28, a Tara Geegan kill force a fifth game.
It didn't look promising for the Raiders early in game five as UIC went in front 5-0, thanks in large part to Katarina Nedejkovic's four aces, including three straight. Wright State, though, chipped away from there and eventually tied the game at seven on a Lindsey Frank ace.
The Flames went back in front 10-7 with three unanswered points, includng another Hanackova kill and a Katie Kozak ace, but WSU followed with three straight of its own on kills from Lizzy Gunn, Alisha Kimbro and Becca Awaa.
An Amanda Kenny kill gave UIC a 11-10 edge, but that turned out to be the final point of the night for the Flames as Wright State closed out the match with a 5-0 run, three of those coming on Raider blocks and one on a Kimbro kill.
UIC (13-12, 6-2 Horizon) finished with a 81-72 advantage in kills, but the Raiders had 10 fewer attack errors on the night as Wright State outhit the Flames .234-.215 and an 11-8 margin in blocks.
