
Volleyball Falls in Five at Youngstown State

The Wright State volleyball team nearly pulled off the comeback, rallying back from a 2-0 game deficit to force a decisive fifth game, but Youngstown State held on by outscoring the Raiders 9-3 down the stretch as the Penguins won in five games in Horizon League action Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center, winning 30-27, 30-28, 20-30, 26-30, 15-11.
YSU outhit Wright State .271-.209 in winning the first two games, but the Raiders started on their comeback by outhitting the Penguins .292-.122 in the third game. The lead was just 16-14 before WSU went on a 9-1 run, including two kills from Jenny Schultz.
Another run, this time 7-2, gave the Raiders a 20-13 advantage in game four and, despite a 6-0 run by Youngstown State late, Wright State forced the fifth game on a Schultz kill.
The Raiders led 8-6 in the fifth game after a Becca Awaa kill, but the Penguins followed with three straight to retake the lead at 9-8 The two teams were then tied at 10 before YSU closed the match with a 5-1 run.
Wright State had a 77-72 edge in kills, but Youngstown State led in hitting percentage (.219-.209) and in blocks (13-7).
Jenny Schultz stretched her double-double streak to seven and recorded her 17th overall of the seasonwith 18 kills and 30 digs while Alisha Kimbro hit an impressive .327 on 18 kills and no errors in 55 attempts. Tara Geegan chipped in 17 kills, Lexi Leonhard 30 digs from the libero spot and setter Lindsey Frank added seven kills and 11 digs to go with 58 assists.
Ruth Boscaljon paced Youngstown State (10-20, 1-12 Horizon) with 18 kills and four blocks while Ebony Barbosa had a double-double of 16 kills and 21 digs. Kaitlin O'Hara also had 16 kills.
Wright State, now 14-14 overall and 8-4 in the Horizon League, closes out the regular season next week with a pair of home matches, taking on Green Bay on Friday, November 10, at 7:00, followed by League-leader Milwaukee on Saturday, November 11, at 4:00.
