The men's soccer team held a 2-1 advantage entering the second half of Sunday's final match of the UAB Classic versus the host Blazers, but couldn't hold the lead as UAB scored two unanswered goals to defeat WSU 3-2.
Neither team was able to gain an advantage until the 28-minute mark when UAB's Dejan Jakovic connected on a Jerson Monteiro pass. The Raiders would answer in the same minute as Josh Grossman scored on a penalty kick for his first goal of the season.
WSU looked to be in control as two minutes later Michael Conley added an unassisted goal to give the Raiders a 2-1 advantage heading into the half.
Goalkeeper Tebias Mason held the Blazers in check for the rest of the first half and looked to be on his way to a win, but in the 71st minute Shane Elsner broke free to score unassisted to knot the game at 2-2. Jakovic would play the role of spoiler in the 81st minute as he scored the game winning goal on a Derrick Radcliffe assist.
Mason finished with seven saves on the day, as the Raiders were outshot by the Blazers 13-10. Despite the loss, the Raiders have yet to be shutout this season, scoring at least one goal in each of their four contests.
Wright State finished the UAB Classic in third place overall behind champion Mercer and second place UAB. Jonah Baskin, Braden Fleak and Jonah Longino were named to the UAB Classic All-Tournament team.
The Green and Gold drop to 2-2 overall on the season and will travel to Florida to take on Jacksonville on Friday, September 8, at 8:00.
