
Volleyball Falls to Texas Tech 3-1 at the USF Smoothie King Invitational

The Wright State volleyball team dropped a four-game decision to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the opening match of the USF Smoothie King Invitational Friday in Tampa, falling 23-30, 30-28, 19-30, 23-30 to the Red Raiders.
In game one, the Red Raiders took control as they scored the first three points and held off the Raiders late charge. With the score 27-19, the Raiders rattled off six straight points, two coming on Tara Geegan kills, to cut the deficit to 27-23.
In game two, WSU posted a match high .260 hitting percentage and committed only two attacking errors to knot the match at one game apiece. The Raiders were led by Alisha Kimbro in the second game, as the junior outside hitter posted four kills, scoring the final two points, and recording two service aces. In game two, the lead changed hands six times and was tied another eleven before the Raiders sealed the victory.
In game three, the Green and Gold found themselves knotted at nine points apiece with TTU, but mustered only ten points the rest of the way to drop the game. Kimbro, Geegan, Sarah Poling and Jenny Schultz each recorded two kills to pace the Raiders attack.
The Raiders fell just short in the fourth game when TTU took control after WSU tied the game at 12-all. Poling paced the Green and Gold with four kills and a service ace in the final game, adding a service ace early to keep the Raiders close. The Red Raiders closed the game out by scoring nine of the last ten points to take the match.
Kimbro led the Raiders with 11 kills, to go along with six service aces, and Poling and Geegan each chipped in nine kills. Schultz, the senior outside hitter, posted a match-high 23 digs and added six kills in the defeat.
The volleyball team falls to 1-7 on the season and will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they face off with the host school South Florida at Noon and finish play with a match against Jacksonville at 5:00.
