For the second straight Tuesday, a strong hitting performance by the Wright State volleyball team led to a road victory as the Raiders defeated the UIC Flames in Horizon League action in Chicago, winning 30-16, 30-28, 25-30, 33-31.
WSU came out strong in game one, scoring the first five points, two on kills from Lizzy Gunn. The Raiders later expanded on a 17-11 advantage with four consecutive points, including back-to-back Alisha Kimbro service aces, and closed with a 13-5 run overall as they outhit the Flames for the game .424-.081.
Wright State again had the early 4-0 lead in the second game, only to see UIC go in front 13-10 with three straight points. The Flame lead was later 16-13 before the Raiders used a 6-1 burst to regain the advantage. UIC went back in front 26-25 on a block from Dana Van Syckle and Lana Lobdell, but WSU responded with four unanswered points and held off a late Flame rally to claim the game.
UIC led the entire way in game three in outhitting Wright State .222-.100 and the fourth game looked to be more of the same early as the Flames led 11-7 following a Katerina Hanackova kill.
The Raiders, though, eventually tied the game at 14 on a Tara Geegan kill and neither team had more than a two-point lead the rest of the way as there would be eight more ties, including at 27 following a Flame attack error.
UIC appeared to be in position to force a fifth game as the Flames went up 29-27 on back-to-back Christin Hunt kills, but the Raiders answered right back with kills from Kimbro, Becca Awaa and Samantha Connor to go up 30-29. Two Amanda Kenny kills kept UIC alive, but Wright State finally pulled out the win on kills by Awaa and Connor on match point.
Wright State finished the night with just one more kill than UIC (67-66), but the Raiders finished with a .273 hitting percentage compared to just .155 for the Flames as WSU committed only 20 attack errors to UIC's 36.
Two Raiders posted double-doubles as Connor had 18 kills and 12 digs in hitting .333 while Kimbro recorded 16 kills and 12 digs along with three aces. Gunn collected 13 kills in also hitting .333 on the night while Awaa had nine kills and no errors in 23 attempts in hitting .391. Lindsey Frank added 57 assists and 10 digs from the setter position and libero Lexi Leonhard chipped in 21 digs.
UIC (9-8, 2-3 Horizon) had four reach double figures in kills, led by Hanackova's double-double of 18 kills and 26 digs. Hunt (14), Kenny (14) and Lobdell (12) also had double figure kill matches.
Wright State, now 6-12 overall and 3-3 in the Horizon League, concludes the Chicago trip Wednesday night at 8:00 Eastern with a visit to Loyola. The Raiders then wrap up the first round of League play by hosting Butler Saturday at 4:00.
