The Wright State volleyball team picked up a key Horizon League road victory Saturday afternoon as the Raiders swept the Valparaiso Crusaders at the Athletics-Recreation Center, winning 30-24, 30-27, 30-26.
Trailing 7-2 early in game one, WSU eventually went in front 10-9 following a Tara Geegan kill. The two teams were then tied four more times until the Raiders took advantage of a pair of Crusader hitting errors to go ahead for good at 18-16. Wright State gradually pulled away from there, scoring seven of the game's final 10 points.
The tables were turned in the second game as it was the Raiders that jumped out to a 7-2, only to see Valparaiso rally to take the lead at 12-9. The VU margin was 17-15 before Wright State scored four straight points to go back in front. It was then back and forth until WSU recorded the final two points on an Alisha Kimbro kill and a block by Lizzy Gunn and Becca Awaa.
Valparaiso broke out to a 10-4 advantage in game three, but again Wright State would rally, eventually gaining the lead at 25-23 following a 4-0 run which included kills from Kimbro and Samantha Connor. Another Connor kill and an ace from the senior outside hitter made it 27-24 and Wright State closed out the match on a block from Lindsey Frank and Geegan and yet another Connor kill.
Valparaiso finished with a 53-45 advantage in kills, but Wright State countered in hitting percentage (.246-.150) and in blocks (14-2).
Kimbro recorded 16 kills as she hit .359 for the match with eight digs while Geegan posted 11 kills in hitting .429 with nine blocks, including two solo. Connor chipped in eight kills and nine digs, Frank 34 assists and 10 digs in hitting .571 and Lexi Leonhard 16 digs.
Val Bollenbacher paced Valparaiso (16-7, 6-4 Horizon) with 22 kills while Angie Porsché had 19 kills.
With the win, Wright State improves to 9-14 overall and 6-5 in the Horizon League, just one-half game behind Valparaiso for fourth in the League standings and two games ahead of fifth place, which is currently held by both UIC and Butler (4-7).
The Raiders return to action on Tuesday, October 23, as WSU hosts Cincinnati for a 7:00 match in the C.J. McLin Gymnasium. That match starts a season-ending stretch of six out of seven at home, the only road contest being at Butler on Friday, October 27.
