The Wright State volleyball team started strong, but could not maintain the momentum as after WSU won the first game, Green Bay took the final three to win in Horizon League action Saturday afternoon at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, defeating the Raiders 21-30, 30-16, 30-24, 30-25.
Wright State came out swinging in the opening game, recording 18 kills with just one error in 37 attempts for a .459 hitting percentage compared to just .229 for the Phoenix. The Raiders jumped out to a 10-4 lead and maintained the advantage the rest of the way, capping off the game by scoring the final three points on two kills by Lizzy Gunn and one from Becca Awaa.
It was Green Bay, however, that would have the fast start in game two, leading 6-1 following a pair of Raider errors. The Phoenix later extended the margin to 16-4 with a 7-0 run that featured two Holly Visser kills and two Nikki Hintze aces.
After the first two games saw no ties or lead changes, the third game had seven ties, the last one being 21-21 on a Tara Geegan kill. The one lead change, though, did not favor the Raiders as kills from Hintze and Visser put the Phoenix up for good and Green Bay ended the stanza by scoring the final four points, two on aces from Rochelle Meulemans.
Game four had seven lead changes and 16 ties, including at 22-all following an Alisha Kimbro kill. Another Visser kill and a Raider error put Green Bay back in front and, despite WSU closing to within one three times late, the Phoenix wrapped up the match by tallying the final four points.
After outhitting the Phoenix .459-.229 in the opening game, Wright State hit just .149 the rest of the way compared to .328 for Green Bay, including a .480 percentage in the second game. The Phoenix also recorded 13 aces to WSU's three and had the edge on blocks at 10-8.
In their final home match, WSU's four seniors combined for 43 kills and 32 digs. Geegan and Samantha Connor each had 14 kills while Kimbro posted a double-double of 11 kills and 15 digs. Lindsey Frank dished out 51 assists and had 11 digs.
Lizzy Gunn added eight kills for the Raiders while libero Lexi Leonhard had 19 digs.
Three players reached double figures in kills for Green Bay (6-19, 4-12 Horizon) as Visser finished with 20 kills in hitting .415 for the match while Hintze recorded a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs. Abby Bergsma added 11 kills along with four aces in hitting .409 while Betty Slinger had 52 assists and 10 digs and Megan Elfering 17 digs.
Wright State, now 13-17 overall and 9-5 in the Horizon League, now turns its attention to the Horizon League Tournament, which begins Thursday at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee. The Raiders will play Friday against an opponent and time to be determined.
