Wright State's four seniors combined for 46 kills, 30 digs, 11 block assists and hit .308 as the Raiders swept the UIC Flames Saturday afternoon in Horizon League volleyball action at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning 30-25, 30-22, 30-27.
The Raiders lead 13-7 in game one following a Flame attack error, but UIC rallied back with a 10-4 run to tie the score at 17. Two kills by Samantha Connor and one from Tara Geegan, though, put Wright State up for good and WSU scored the final four points, including another kill each from Connor and Geegan, to win going away.
Wright State then jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second game, a start that featured three Alisha Kimbro kills. UIC, however, would again post a comeback and again tied the game at 17 with a 7-0 run of its own, including two Casie Sullivan service aces.
The Raiders, though, used three blocks in scoring four straight to go back in front and, like the first game, won going away by tallying the final six points, the last two as a result of blocks by Shaunda Sandifer, Kimbro and Frank.
After just four ties and no lead changes the first two games, game three was much closer with 11 ties and four lead changes. Three consecutive Connor kills gave WSU a 23-18 advantage, but the Flames scored five of the next six to only trail by one.
UIC later tied the game at 26 on a Raider attack error, but a Frank kill gave Wright State the lead back and after another Frank kill and one from Kimbro allowed the Raiders to reach match point, Katie Laravie closed out the match with an ace.
The Raiders controlled the statistics as they held a 55-34 kill advantage, outhit the Flames .244-.071 and outblocked UIC 12-9.
Kimbro led Wright State with 15 kills while Connor posted a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs and Geegan added 12 kills and six blocks in hitting .556 for the match. Frank nearly had a triple-double as she recorded seven kills with no errors in 10 attempts, dished out 36 assists and had 11 digs. Libero Lexi Leonhard chipped in 14 digs.
Lana Lobdell paced UIC (14-14, 6-9 Horizon) with 10 kills while Katerina Hanackova added eight kills and 12 digs.
Wright State, now 13-15 overall and 9-5 in the Horizon League, wraps up the regular season next wekend with a pair of home matches, taking on League-leader Milwaukee on Friday, November 9, at 7:00, followed by Green Bay on Saturday, November 10, at 4:00.
