Softball Splits With Youngstown State

It was a similar script in both games Saturday at the WSU Softball Field as Wright State had a 4-0 lead each time, only to see Youngstown State rally in both to tie the score. The difference, though, was in the final results as after the Penguins took the opener 7-5, the Raiders scored a run in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to pull out a 5-4 win.
WSU jumped out to that 4-0 lead in game one by scoring all four in the third. Kristen Bradshaw reached on an error to start the inning and after Michelle Logan reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners, both pulled off the double steal to make it 1-0. Another error allowed the second run to come in and Malerie Klingler capped off the frame with a two-run single up the middle.
McKenzie Bedra, however, started the Penguins on their comeback with a two-run home run to right in the fourth and despite Wright State tacking on a run in its half of the inning on a Perkins RBI hit, Youngstown State went in front by exploding for five in the fifth, the final two coming on a Bethany Hafley double.
The Raiders loaded the bases in the seventh, but YSU pitcher Karlie Burnell (10-6) closed out the game with a strikeout.
Logan, Perkins and Jacqueline Macy each had two hits in the opener for the Raiders.
Wright State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two as Logan had another infield hit and came in on a triple to right center off the bat of Jherica Williams, who later scored on a Perkins hit up the middle.
The margin grew to 4-0 with a run in the fourth on a Macy triple and a Dana Boehmer ground out and another in the fifth on a RBI hit from Kristen Farley.
But, just like she did in the first game, Bedra started the Penguins on their comeback with a two-run homer in the sixth, this time to left. Youngstown State (14-16, 5-5 Horizon) eventually added two more runs in the frame to tie the game at 4-4.
It stayed that way until the Raiders pulled out the victory in the seventh. With one out, Bradshaw doubled to left center and yet another Logan infield hit put runners at first and third. After Williams was intentionally walked, Farley's grounder to a diving Allyse Ledford at short resulted in Bradshaw coming in with the winning run.
Bradshaw, Logan and Farley each had two hits in the second game for Wright State, while Allison Cox (11-12) picked up the win in relief.
Wright State, now 18-28 on the season and 5-7 in the Horizon League, wraps up the three-game series with Youngstown State with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
