
Volleyball Tops Youngstown State in Five Games

For the second straight day, the Wright State volleyball team won a five-game thriller in Horizon League play as the Raiders defeated Youngstown State Saturday at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, winning 30-26, 28-30, 30-22, 17-30, 15-9.
The Raiders outhit the Penguins .254-.209 over the first three games and held a 51-46 kill advantage, including 14 from Tara Geegan and 10 from Alisha Kimbro, but YSU scored the first five points of game four and seven of the final eight to force the decisive fifth game.
A Jessica Fraley kill and ace gave Youngstown State a 3-1 edge in the fifth game, but the Raiders followed with a 5-1 run, including two Samantha Connor kills and a kill and block by Geegan.
A later kill by Fraley drew the Penguins to with two at 10-8, but WSU used a Kimbro kill and a block from Lizzy Gunn and Connor in scoring three unanswered points and the Raiders closed out the match on a ball handling error and an attack error.
Kimbro posted a double-double of 18 kills and 10 digs for the Raiders while Geegan added 15 kills and Connor and Awaa 10 each. Setter Lindsey Frank had a double-double of 54 assists and 13 digs while libero Lexi Leonhard tallied 28 digs and Jessica Woods chipped in 16.
Fraley recorded a double-double of 22 kills and 10 digs along with six blocks and four aces for Youngstown State (6-7, 0-2 Horizon) while Barbosa also had one of 15 kills and 25 digs. Heinz added 13 kills, setter Karla Everhart 54 assists and 17 digs and libero Laurie Shives 22 digs.
With the two wins this weekend, WSU is 2-0 in League play for the first time since 2002, when the Raiders defeated Milwaukee and Green Bay at home.
Wright State, now 4-9 overall, heads to the Badger State next weekend for a pair of Horizon League matches, taking on Green Bay on Friday, September 21, at 8:00 Eastern followed by Milwaukee on Saturday, September 22, at 5:00 Dayton time.
