The Wright State volleyball team nearly pulled out its third straight five-game win at home, but came up short as the Valparaiso Crusaders remained undefeated in Horizon League play, defeating the Raiders 25-30, 30-28, 28-30, 30-25, 15-9.
The Raiders trailed 11-4 early in game one, but gradually chipped away at the deficit and tied the game at 17 after a 6-0 run, capped off by a Lexi Leonhard service ace. WSU later broke away from a 21-20 lead by scoring four of the next five points.
Wright State then looked to be in good shape in the second game, up 27-25 following a block from Becca Awaa and Tara Geegan, but Valparaiso tied the game on a Angie Porche kill and a Raider attack error. A Jessica Woods kill again put the Raiders up one, but the Crusaders took advantage of WSU miscues to score the final three points.
Game three featured 11 ties and six lead changes before Wright State went up for good at 22-21 on another block from Awaa and Geegan. Valparaiso closed to within one on three occasions, but a Lindsey Frank kill gave the Raiders the win.
WSU trailed 24-23 in game four before the Crusaders put the game out of reach with four straight points, two on Porche kills. Valparaiso then carried that momentum into the decisive fifth game by scoring four of the first five points, including two more Porche kills.
Wright State would come as close as one twice before Valparaiso put the match out of reach with a 4-1 burst to make it 12-7.
WSU recorded 22 blocks on the night compared to seven for Valparaiso, but the Crusaders held a 69-45 kill advantage and outhit the Raiders .102-.070.
Geegan led Wright State with 10 kills and had eight blocks on the night while Kimbro had nine kills along with 21 digs. Gunn (13) and Awaa (10) both reached double figures in blocks while Frank had 33 assists and 14 digs and Leonhard chipped in 17 digs from the libero position.
Porche recorded a double-double of 24 kills and 21 digs for Valparaiso (12-3, 3-0 Horizon) while Val Bollenbacher had 17 kills and Jill Meyer 13 kills. Libero Brittany Malicoat tallied 20 digs.
Wright State, now 5-12 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League, heads to the Windy City for a rare midweek swing as the Raiders take on UIC on Tuesday, October 2, and Loyola on Wednesday, October 3, both at 8:00 Eastern time. WSU then hosts Butler on Saturday, October 6, at 4:00.
