The Wright State men's soccer team dropped a tightly contested match to crosstown rival Dayton on Friday evening at Alumni Field. The Raiders took seven second-half corner kicks and outshot UD 6-5 in the second stanza, but the early second-half goal by the Flyers downed the Green and Gold.
The two teams played an almost even first half with each team taking three corner kicks and each goal keeper making two saves. The only difference was in shots, where Dayton held a seven-to-three advantage.
The Flyers (5-1-2) took the advantage in the second half when Jeff Popella converted on the games first tally. After a long pass from the midfield, UD's Alex Torda controlled the ball at the top of the penalty box and sent a one touch pass to the foot of Popella who notched the marker from eight yards out.
With Dayton leading 1-0, WSU mounted an attack in the 78th minute when Josh Grossman sent a crossing pass into the PK area. The pass found Jonah Longino who connected on a bicycle kick that was blocked by the Flyers defense.
In the match, the Flyers held a 12 to nine advantage in shots, Wright State took ten corner kicks to Dayton's eight. WSU keeper Tebias Mason recorded three saves in the match, while his counterpart from UD posted two saves.
Wright State now falls to 2-6 overall this season and will take on Buckeye State foe Akron on Wednesday, October 3. The Raiders and Zips will take to the pitch at Alumni Field starting at 7:00.
