The Wright State volleyball team nearly made its home debut a winning one, rallying from a 2-1 deficit and leading 11-9 in the fifth game, but could not hold on as Eastern Michigan scored six of the match's final seven points to pull out the victory, winning 30-25, 30-32, 30-14, 17-30, 15-12.
The Raiders led 10-5 early in game one, but a later 7-0 run put the Eagles ahead to stay at 16-13. Lexi Leonhard drew WSU to 21-20 with an ace, but four straight Eastern Michigan points put the game out of reach.
Wright State then trailed 22-16 in the second game, only to come storming back and trailed just 23-22 following a Tara Geegan kill. An EMU attack error and a block from Samantha Connor and Lizzy Gunn put the Raiders ahead 25-24 and a later block by Gunn and Jessica Woods made it 29-27.
The Eagles, though, looked like they were going to steal game two from WSU as they scored three straight to go up 30-29. A service error, however, kept the Raiders alive and they took advantage by scoring the final two points on a block from Geegan and Becca Awaa and a Woods kill.
Both teams then put on dominate displays over the next two games as after Eastern Michigan hit .333 in winning game three, Wright State responded with a .552 attack in taking the fourth game.
The two teams were tied eight times in the fifth game before the Raiders looked to be in control at 11-9 on a Lindsey Frank kill and a block from Connor and Gunn. Eastern, however, followed with five straight points, including three kills and a block from Becky Reenders and, after WSU broke that string on a bad set, claimed the match on a Lauren Boehmer kill.
The kills were nearly even for the match (71-67 EMU) and Wright State led in blocks (14-11), aces (7-3) and digs (104-95), but the Eagles outhit the Raiders .176-.159.
Connor posted her fourth double-double of the season with 19 kills and 20 digs for Wright State while Geegan added 16 kills along with six blocks. Frank chipped in a near triple-double of 46 assists, 17 digs and nine kills while Woods had 21 digs, Gunn nine kills and eight blocks, Awaa 15 digs and Lexi Leonhard 12 digs.
Abby Reenders paced Eastern Michigan (7-1) with a double-double of 18 kills and 27 digs while sister Becky also recorded one of 14 kills and 17 digs.
WSU, now 1-7 on the season, is back in action this weekend by hosting the Raider Challenge at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium. Liberty and South Florida will face each other in the opening match on Friday, September 7, at 5:00, followed by the Raiders going up against The Citadel at 7:00. The tournament concludes on Saturday with four matches starting at Noon.
