
Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw Versus #6 UIC

The Wright State men's soccer team played nationally-ranked UIC to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. WSU scored the first goal of the afternoon, but UIC answered with an early second half tally and each goalkeeper showcased their talents to preserve the draw.
The Raiders got the scoring started in the first half when Braden Fleak netted his fifth marker of the season. John Gulden sent a long crossing pass from the left flank and Fleak connected on the header to the far post to give WSU an early 1-0 lead.
The Flames pushed the equalizer into the net in the second half when Pat McMahon scored his first goal of the season. McMahon deflected a long shot by Ian Sarachan into the corner of the net to knot the game at one goal apiece at the 47:54 mark.
Wright State would have their chance to score the go ahead goal in the 54th minute when Fleak was fouled in the 18-yard box and a penalty kick was awarded. Senior Josh Grossman took the PK and UIC keeper Jovan Bubonja made a diving save to keep the match tied.
As the match headed into overtime, where the Green and Gold out-shot UIC 3-2 and forced Bubonja to make three saves to preserve the tie.
Wright State keeper Matt Koewler made four saves in the match to collect WSU's first regular season tie since playing to a 1-1 tied at Green Bay during the 2004 season.
UIC held a slight edge in shots (15-13) and the Flames took six corner kicks to three for WSU. Each team was flagged for six offsides and the two squads took a combined 14 shots on goal in the match.
The Raiders are now 2-8-1 overall and move to 1-1-1 in the Horizon League and will return to home field action for their next match on Saturday, October 10. WSU will entertain Detroit in a night match at Alumni Field, game time is scheduled for 7:00.
