Softball Wins Twice in Day One of USF Louisville Slugger Tournament

The Wright State softball team picked up two impressive wins Friday in day one of the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament in Tampa, defeating host South Florida 2-1 and Wisconsin 5-0.

The Raiders fell behind 1-0 as South Florida scored a run in the bottom of the first, but WSU would score what turned out to be the decisive two runs in the next inning. After Wright State loaded the bases with no outs on walks by Allison Cox and Bridget Henry and a Jamie Perkins hit to center, Justine Shilt had a single to left to plate Cox and tie the game. Heather Bauer followed with a walk to force in a run and make it 2-1, but Bull pitcher Courtney Mosch pitched out of the jam with two strikeouts and a line out to short.

Raider pitcher Sharon Palma (1-2) made that slim advantage stand up the rest of the way, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and two on in the seventh. She scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

The Bulls came into the tournament with a 6-3 record, including wins over #5 Tennessee, Illinois and Mississippi.

Wright State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning against Wisconsin as after Jherica Williams and Louie Haney singled, both advanced a base on a wild pitch and scored as Kristen Bradshaw had a hit down the left field line.

The Raiders tacked on two more in the third and again it was Williams and Haney that set the stage as both had hits to get into scoring position. A Bradshaw groundout plated Williams and Cox followed with a single to right to knock in Haney.

Bradshaw then capped off the scoring in the fifth with a solo home run to left center.

In the circle, Cox (1-1) shut out the Badgers, giving up six hits and one walk while striking out seven.

Wright State, now 2-5 on the season, continues play in the tournament with two more games on Saturday, taking on Hofstra at 11:30 a.m. followed by Georgia Tech at 8:00.
