Wright State could not overcome a big day from Amy Solava as she picked up the decision in the first game, hit the game-winning three-run home run in the 11th and added a two-run blast in the second game to lead Loyola to a sweep in Horizon League action Saturday at the WSU Softball Field. The Ramblers won the opener 6-3 in 11 innings and 6-4 in the nightcap.
Loyola appeared to be in control in game one as the Ramblers scored single runs in the second and sixth to go up 2-0 with Solava allowing just one hit through five innings.
The Raiders, though, would rally to tie to score in the sixth. With one out, Michelle Logan doubled to the fence in the left center and scored one out later as Louie Haney doubled down the left field line. After Jherica Williams walked, Kristen Bradshaw delivered a hit through the left side of the infield to plate Haney with the tying run.
Nora Schubert put Loyola back in front with a RBI single in the eighth, only to see WSU tie it again at 3-3 as Bradshaw singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored as Allison Cox doubled to left.
It stayed that way until the decisive 11th. Haley Ambrosch walked and reached second safely after a failed tag attempt by second baseman Heather Bauer on a ball off the bat of Lindsey O'Gean. Solava then entered the lineup to hit and hit a 3-1 pitch over the fence in center for her first home run of the season.
Solava (10-8) struck out eight in the complete-game effort while Sharon Palma (11-8) did the same for the Raiders, fanning nine. Mollie Berry had three hits to lead Wright State while Haney and Bradshaw had two each.
Loyola (14-17, 8-4 Horizon) used the home run ball to build an early lead in game two, using a leadoff home run by Kat Krause in the first and a two-run shot by Solava in the third, both to straight away center, to go up 3-0. The Ramblers later made it 6-0 in the fourth with three consecutive two-out hits.
Wright State cut into the deficit on a RBI single by Justine Shilt in the fourth, added two more in the fifth on a Berry hit and a wild pitch and threatened to tie the game in the seventh with a Shilt groundout resulting in a run and the potential tying runs at second and third, but Logan's soft liner to pitcher Krista Crosson (4-9) ended the game.
The Raiders left 11 runners on base in each game and have stranded 54 in six games this week while scoring 21 runs.
Wright State, now 22-21 overall and 9-5 in the Horizon League, closes out the three-game set against Loyola with a single game Sunday starting at 1:00. The four Raider seniors--Bridget Henry, Michelle Logan, Jacqueline Macy and Jherica Williams--will be honored before the game and the three new inductees to the Walk of Fame--Annie Divac, Tracy Hawkins and Amanda Kendrick--will be recognized during the contest.
