The Wright State men's soccer team dropped their season opening match in double-overtime to Wisconsin in the Flyer Marriot Classic, hosted by the University of Dayton. The offense got started quickly with each team tallying a goal in the first 15 minutes, but almost went the distance before the match winner was scored.
The Badgers started the scoring in the sixth minute when Pablo Delgado slipped a shot under a diving WSU keeper Matt Koewler.
The Raiders would tally the equalizer just seven minutes later when senior Josh Grossman sent a through pass into the 18-yard box and junior Braden Fleak capitalized with his first goal of the season. Fleak took the pass and flicked a shot over the keeper and knotted the game at 1-1 at the 12:44 mark.
The next 93 minutes were played scoreless and the match headed deep into double overtime. In the 106th minute the deciding goal was scored by Wisconsin. Scott Lorenz sent a header to the far post off of a UW corner kick at the 105:50 mark, giving WSU their first loss of the season.
The Badgers held the advantage in shots (16-14) and goalkeeper saves (4-3), with WSU holding the advantage with 10 corner kicks, to only six for Wisconsin.
The Raiders are now 0-1 on the season and will face off with backyard rival Dayton on Sunday, August 31. That match will start at 2:30 and be held at Baujan Field.
