The Wright State men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over IPFW on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. The Green and Gold tallied two goals for the first time in 2008 and collected their first victory of the season in the process.
The Raiders got the scoring started in the 13th minute when Braden Fleak connected on his second goal of the season. Fleak took a long lead pass from Josh Grossman and dribbled around the keeper and tapped a shot into an open net.
With the Green and Gold leading 1-0, the Mastodons answered with a first half goal of their own. Max Touloute dribbled down the middle of the field and beat WSU keeper Aaron Ritter one-on-one and buried a shot from nine yards out to knot the game at 1-1.
In the first half, the Raiders out-shot IPFW 14 to two in the first half and WSU took nine shots to seven in the second half. The two teams played the second 45-minutes scoreless and the match headed into overtime.
Wright State scored what looked to be the match winner in the 87th minute when Fleak pushed a shot into the back of the net. An offside's call negated the goal and Fleak would end the match with 13 shots, two more than the entire IPFW team took.
In the first extra session, the Mastodons took two shots and WSU couldn't muster any shots. The second overtime saw only one shot, coming off the foot Wright State.
The opening kickoff was controlled by IPFW, but the Raiders took control of the ball just two-minutes in. Senior defender Roger Downing took control of the ball at midfield and dribbled his way downfield and into the 18-yard box. After a dribbling around a pair of mastodon defenders, Downing sent a sliding pass to the front of the net, squeezing past the diving IPFW keeper and onto the foot of Adam Harp.
Harp connected with the ball and tapped the match winning goal into an open net from three yards out. It was the first goal of the season for the junior and gives him eight goals in his career.
Ritter made four saves in 102 minutes of netminding and collected his first collegiate win in goal.
The Green and Gold held a nine to three advantage in corner kicks and took 24 shots to only 11 for the Mastodons. The Raiders forced Michael Knitter to make six saves in the contest.
Wright State is now 1-4 on the season and will take to the pitch at Alumni Field on Friday, September 12. The Raiders will square off with SIU Edwardsville starting at 7:00.
