
Women Win at Youngstown State

Down a point one minute into the second half, Wright State followed with a 13-0 run to take control as the Raiders defeated the Youngstown State Penguins 68-51 in Horizon League women's basketball action at the Beeghly Center Saturday afternoon.
LaShawna Thomas scored the first five points of the contest, but the Penguins responded with six straight to take the lead for the first time. Youngstown State later went up 15-11 on a Jaquetta Westley foul shot at the 5:46 mark, only to see WSU close the period by outscoring the Penguins 15-10 to go up 26-25 at the break.
Wright State shot 42 percent in the first half compared to 35 percent for Youngstown State and held a 21-14 rebounding advantage, but the Penguins forced the Raiders into 13 turnovers while committing just six, resulting in an 8-4 differential in points off of turnovers.
YSU went back in front 29-28 on a Kelsey Gurganus jumper with 18:50 remaining, but the Raiders followed with the decisive 13-0 burst, capped off with a Shey Peddy jumper with 10:09 left.
The Penguins would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way as Wright State again went up 19 at 68-49 on a Paige Lowe jumper in the final seconds.
The Raiders shot 53 percent in the second half to end the game at 49 percent overall while Youngstown State hit for 46 percent the final 20 minutes to finish at 40 percent. WSU held a 44-25 rebounding advantage, 15-7 on the offensive end, and outscored the Penguins 30-22 in the paint and 12-3 in second-chance points.
Ta-myra Davis led all scorers with 16 points for Wright State while Peddy had 12, eight in the second half, and Kanisha Ward had seven points and five assists off the bench.
Macey Nortey paced Youngstown State (2-23, 0-14 Horizon) with 14 points and six assists.
Wright State (11-15, 7-8 Horizon) wraps up the three-game road swing on Saturday, February 28, at Detroit. Game time is 1:30.
