Softball Drops Pair in Day Two of Las Vegas Tournament

The Wright State softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday at the Eller Media Stadium Tournament in Las Vegas, falling to Florida Atlantic 5-3 and Drake 12-3.
Florida Atlantic scored twice in the top of the first, but the Raiders answered with a single run in their half of the first on back-to-back doubles by Jamie Perkins and Louie Haney. WSU tied in in the second as Briauna Birl singled with two out, stole second and came home on a single from Perkins.
The Owls went back in front 4-2 with runs in the third and fourth before WSU trimmed the deficit to one with a run in the fifth. Haney's second double of the game and a Kristen Bradshaw hit through the left side put runners on the corners and Mollie Berry followed with an infield hit to plate Haney.
Wright State eventually loaded the bases with no outs as Justine Shilt had a bunt single, but could not get any closer as a groundout resulted in a force out at the plate and the next two batters flied out to left. Florida Atlantic then added an insurance run in the seventh.
Haney led WSU with three hits while Perkins and Bradshaw each had two. Melanie Heyne allowed just two earned run in the complete-game effort with five strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, it was all Drake early as the Bulldogs scored three runs in both the first and second innings and six more in the third. The Raiders picked up a run in the third on a RBI groundout by Haney, another in the fourth on a wild pitch and one more in the fifth as Berry walked with the bases loaded.
Wright State (4-8) wraps up tournament play Sunday at 1:00 Eastern against Loyola Marymount.
