Casey McGrew collected three hits and drove in two RBI's, while Michael Woytek tossed five innings to help the Wright State Baseball team to an 8-1 victory on Friday afternoon at Valparaiso. The Green and Gold collected 11 hits and all nine starters either scored a run or drove in an RBI to help WSU even its Horizon League mark at 5-5.
The Raiders got the offense started in the opening frame when R.J. Gundolff tripled to start the contest and scored on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Jake Hibberd.
In the fourth, Wright State tacked on a pair of runs as McGrew doubled to lead off the inning and Quentin Cate walked to put two on with no outs. Kory Twede sacrificed the runners to second and third with a bunt, before Aaron Fields plated the first run with a sacrifice fly. Ryan Ashe drove in an RBI with a single to left field with two outs in the frame, bringing home Cate, to give WSU a 3-0 lead.
Valparaiso tacked on a run in their half of the fourth as a throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed the first VU run to cross the plate against WSU starting pitcher Woytek.
Woytek got into some trouble in the fifth inning as he loaded the bases with one out in the frame. The Crusaders used a hit batter, a single and a walk to pack the sacks before the right hander nabbed a line drive back at the mound and doubled off the runner at second base to hold the Raiders lead at 3-1.
The fifth was the last inning of work for Woytek, who left with a 3-1 lead, as he allowed only one run on four hits. The sophomore improves to 3-2 on the season as he walked five batters, struck out four and turned one double play.
Gundolff drove in an RBI in the seventh inning after Aaron Fields led the inning off with a single and Twede added a pair of RBI's with a single in the eighth to push the Raiders lead to 6-1. The Green and Gold would cap their scoring with a two-RBI double from McGrew in the ninth and Michael Schum would preserve the victory for WSU.
Schum came on and threw the final four innings scoreless to collect his seventh save of the season. The right hander fanned four batters and didn't walk anyone in his 21st outing of the year.
McGrew doubled, tripled and drove in two runs in the contest, while Twede drove in a pair of RBI's and stole his sixth base of the season. Gundolff collected two hits, including a triple, while eight of the nine WSU starters collected hits.
The Raiders are now 17-20 overall and 5-5 in the Horizon League after the series opening victory. The two teams will conclude their series on Saturday, April 18, starting at 1:00 Dayton time. The Green and Gold will take to the field for a doubleheader with the Crusaders with Rylan Ostrosky and Travis LaMar scheduled to throw for WSU.
