
Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to IPFW

For the sixth time this season and fourth in the last eight matches, the Wright State volleyball team went the limit with an opponent, only to see IPFW score five of the match's six points to pull out a five-set win over the Raiders Tuesday night at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium. The Mastodons won the match 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 15-13.
WSU tallied five straight points, three coming on two blocks and a kill from Shaunda Sandifer, in overcoming a 20-19 deficit and winning the opening set, but IPFW evened the match by scoring the first five points in the second set and hitting .324. The Mastodons hit .400 in taking the third set, but the Raiders forced a decisive fifth set with an 8-2 run midway through the fourth set.
In the fifth set, IPFW jumped out to a 6-1 advantage and led 10-6 on a Shannon Reuter kill, only to see Wright State rally with six unanswered to go 12-10, half coming on kills from Lexi Leonhard. The Mastodons responded with three straight in regaining the lead, but another Leonhard kill tied it at 13.
IPFW, however, took the match on a Rebekah Roehm kill followed by a block on match point.
WSU had more kills (65-60), but IPFW outhit the Raiders .227-.156.
Sandifer led the Raiders with 24 kills while Leonhard posted a double-double of 17 kills and 20 digs as did Michelle Hammond of 60 assists and 13 digs. Becca Awaa had a near double-double of nine kills and 14 digs while Stefanie Shiramizu chipped in 23 digs.
Roehm paced IPFW (9-7) with a double-double of 26 kills and 20 digs while Stephanie Lamberti had 15 kills and Reuter 51 assists and 17 digs.
Wright State, now 8-8 on the season, returns to Horizon League play this weekend as the Raiders host Loyola on Friday at 7:00 followed by UIC Saturday at 4:00.
