Women Use Big Second Half to Rout Youngstown State

The Wright State women's basketball team outscored Youngstown State 36-9 in the second half to claim their second straight Horizon League victory, 65-31, at the Ervin J. Nutter Center on Saturday. The Green and Gold forced 31 turnovers, turning those into 35 points, and held the Penguins to just 20 percent shooting for the contest.
LaShawna Thomas opened the scoring with a basket at the 19:00 mark, but it was Youngstown State that would grab the early lead. The Penguins strung together seven straight points to take a 7-2 advantage, but the Raiders would retake the lead at 8-7 on a pair of Erica Richardson free throws.
Kaitlyn Manuel gave YSU the lead again at 18-16 with 7:19 to play in the first half with a three-pointer from the right wing, but it was the final lead of the contest for the Penguins. The Raiders would close the half on a 13-4 run, taking a 29-22 lead into the locker room at halftime, with five of those points coming from Molly Fox.
The second half was all WSU, as the Green and Gold's defense stepped up and limited the Penguin offense to just two field goals – one of those a three pointer – and four free throws. WSU tallied 15 baskets in the second stanza and outscored YSU 36-9 over the final 20 minutes.
After Brandi Brown opened the scoring with a layup for Youngstown State, Ta-myra Davis scored the next seven points for WSU to push their lead to 12 points, 36-24. The Raiders would add 12 more unanswered points, before a pair of Rachael Manuel free throws at the 12:58 mark.
With the score 48-28, Wright State scored 18 of the final 21 points to cap an impressive effort versus the Penguins. The Raiders shot 47 percent for the contest, made 85 percent of their free throws and committed only 15 turnovers.
Davis posted a double-double of 18 points and ten rebounds versus her former team, while Thomas added 17 points and Maria Bennett added 12. Ward dished out 10 assists, a career-high, and chipped in five steals for WSU.
Kaitlyn March and Maryum Jenkins each scored seven to pace Youngstown State (0-20, 0-9 Horizon), while Brown nabbed a game-best 14 boards.
Wright State (7-12, 3-6 Horizon) hosts Milwaukee on Thursday, February 4, at Sinclair Community College starting at 7:00.
