Wright State opened the home portion of its schedule on a winning note Tuesday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field as the Raiders rallied in both games to sweep Ohio, taking the opener 6-5 and the nightcap 3-2 in eight innings.
It was all Bobcats in the early going of game one as Ohio scored three times in the first and one more in the fourth to go up 4-0.
WSU, however, started its comeback with two in its half of the fourth. Allison Cox led off with a hit to left and walks to Jamie Perkins and Mollie Berry loaded the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter Katie Kine then delivered a two-run double to right, scoring pinch-runner Brittany Waddell and Perkins.
The Raiders tied the score with two more in the fifth. Kristen Bradshaw led off with a triple to right center and after Louie Haney reached on an infield hit, both runners pulled off the double steal to make it 4-3. One out later, Cox singled to center to plate Haney and tie the game.
Ohio, though, regained the lead with a run in the seventh on a solo home run to right off the bat of Sara Clark and it looked like that would be the winning run as the first two Wright State batters were retired in the seventh.
China Frost, though, kept the game alive with a single to shortstop and after Malerie Klingler had a single to left, Perkins produced the game-winner, a double to the fence in left on a full-count pitch and both runners on the move.
Melanie Heyne (3-7) picked up the complete-game victory as she struck out two.
In the second game, Ohio again took an early lead with a run in the second and another in the fourth before the Raiders answered with two in the bottom of the fourth. Frost singled, went to second on a passed ball and moved up to third on a Perkins hit. Perkins stole second to put two runners in scoring position and Berry followed with a squeeze bunt single to plate Frost. After Berry stole second and Kine walked to load the bases, a Haney ground out drove in Perkins to make it 2-2.
With the international tiebreaker starting in the eighth, the Bobcats had an opportunity with a runner at third and one out. The runner, however, did not tag up as Perkins made a diving catch of Emily Wethington's fly ball to left and WSU escaped the threat on a ground out.
The Raiders then had their chance with a runner on second to begin their half of the eighth and cashed in as Frost bunted Bradshaw to third and Perkins ended it with a double to right center.
Cox (1-0) earned the win with five innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit while striking out one.
Wright State (8-15) opens Horizon League play this weekend by hosting Detroit in a three-game series, starting with a 1:00 doubleheader on Saturday.
