The Wright State softball team stretched its winning streak to six with an 8-1 win in the first game against Dayton Wednesday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field, but darkness halted the streak in the second game as the Raiders and Flyers ended in a 1-1 tie after eight innings.
Down 1-0 in the first game, Wright State's Briauna Birl reached base on a single in the third inning. After stealing second, she then tied the game at 1-1 by scoring on a Louie Haney single.
The Raiders took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth. Mollie Berry was hit by a pitch to start the frame and scored on a Malerie Klingler triple to center. Katie Kine then drove in Klinger on a single and Birl finished out the scoring in the fourth by driving in Kine with a single to make it a 4-1 game.
A walk by Jamie Perkins started off the fifth for the Raiders. Perkins then stole second and moved to third on a single by Allison Cox. Brittany Waddell came in to pinch-run for Cox and stole second. Klingler then cleared the bases with her first career homerun to give Wright State a 7-1 lead.
The Raiders finished their scoring in the sixth when Haney ripped a double and then scored when a fly ball by Perkins was dropped in left field.
The eight runs were more than enough for Wright State's Melanie Heyne, who pitched six innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits as she struck out four. Sharon Palma closed the game out in the circle for the Raiders by retiring the side.
Palma started the second game of the afternoon in spectacular fashion. After finishing out the first game by striking out two Flyers, Palma started out game two by striking out six batters in her first two innings of work. For the game, she ended up striking out 12 in nine innings of work.
Despite Palma's performance in the circle and taking an early 1-0 lead, Wright State wasn't able to record a win.
Klingler led the third off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kine. She then scored on a throwing error to make the score 1-0.
It wasn't until the sixth inning that UD answered back. Anne Maci scored for the Flyers on a fielding error by Bradshaw to knot the score at 1-1.
The Raiders had their chance to answer back in the bottom half of the sixth. Haney led off with a single and advance to second when Perkins reached on an error. But after that, the Flyers recorded three straight outs to get out of the inning.
Wright State (12-15-1) returns to Horizon League play this weekend as the Raiders host Loyola in a three-game series, starting with a 1:00 doubleheader on Friday.
