Softball Defeats Mississippi Valley State to Wrap Up Bulldog Classic

The Wright State softball team closed out play at the Bulldog Classic Sunday with a win in the consolation game, scoring four times in the third to defeat the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 6-2 in Starkville, Mississippi.
WSU opened the scoring with a run in the first as Briauna Birl singled, stole second, went to third on a Louie Haney groundout and scored on another groundout, this time by China Frost.
The Raiders then broke the game open with the four-run third. With one out, Birl had an infield hit and advanced to second on a throwing error. A Haney single put runners on the corners and both pulled off a double steal to produce a run. Kristen Bradshaw followed with a single to center to drive in Haney and, after a Frost infield hit and steal of second, scored on an illegal pitch call. Justine Shilt plated Frost with the final run on a single to left.
Wright State picked up an unearned run in the fourth to go up 6-0, only to see Mississippi Valley State cut into the deficit with two runs in the sixth. Melanie Heyne (2-4), however, closed out the complete-game win with a scoreless seventh. She struck out four in scattering six hits.
Frost paced the Raider offense with three hits while Birl and Bradshaw each collected two. Frost and Haney were each named to the All-Tournament Team.
Wright State (6-10) returns to action next weekend by playing in its fifth and final tournament, the Aggie Invitational in College Station, Texas. WSU will face North Dakota State (11:00) and host Texas A&M (6:15) on Friday, Utah State (11:00) and North Dakota State (1:15) on Saturday and Utah State (11:00) on Sunday.
