The Wright State softball team snapped a six-game losing streak in a big way Saturday, sweeping a Horizon League doubleheader from Youngstown State at McCune Park, winning the first game 13-7 and the second 10-3.
The Penguins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning before the Raiders picked up a run in the second on a Justine Shilt home run to center, her third of the season.
Youngstown State answered with a run of its own in its half of the second before WSU went in front to stay with four in the third. Louie Haney doubled in the first run and after the second run scored on an errror, Shilt later added a two-run single.
An error and a Haney single resulted in two more runs in the fourth and Wright State tacked on four more in the sixth as Kristen Bradshaw smacked a two-run homer to left center, her second of the year, and Shilt had an RBI double. Jamie Perkins then rounded out the scoring in the seventh as her hit up the middle drove in two.
Allison Cox (4-3) picked up the win in relief as she struck out five in five innings. Offensively, Shilt was four-for-four with four RBI, Briauna Birl had three hits and Haney and Perkins each had two.
Perkins struck again in the opening inning of game two with a two-run home run to left center, her fifth of the season, and an error in the second gave Wright State a 3-0 lead. The Raiders added four more in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to account for their remaining scoring.
Melanie Heyne (6-11) went the first four innings for the win while Cox earned her second save of the year by shutting out the Penguins over the final three. Perkins drove in three while Cox, China Frost, Mollie Berry and Birl had two hits.
Wright State (15-22-1, 6-5 Horizon) wraps up the series with Youngstown State with a single game Sunday at noon.
