Wright State rallied to within two late, but could not overcome a 9-2 Marshall lead after four innings as the Raiders dropped a 9-7 decision to the Thundering Herd in Huntington, West Virginia, Thursday afternoon.

Marshall scored twice in the first and added another run in the second before WSU answered with a pair in the third. With one out, Casey McGrew doubled to left and, two pitches later, R.J. Gundolff followed with a two-run home run to left, his second of the season.

The Thundering Herd, however, continued their scoring over the next three frames, including four in the fourth, to go up 9-2 after five innings.

The Raiders started their comeback attempt with three in the sixth. Quentin Cate led off with a solo home run to left center, his eighth of the year, and after loading the bases on walks to Gerald Ogrinc and Aaron Fields infield hit, Dan Marsh walked to force in a run and McGrew hit into a fielder's choice to plate Ashe.

Wright State added a run in the seventh on an Ashe RBI single, another in the eighth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Garrett Gray and had two runners reach base in the ninth on walks to Marsh and McGrew, but could get no closer.

McGrew, Gundolff and Jake Hibberd each had two hits to lead the way for WSU, with McGrew scoring twice. The Raider bullpen trio of Jordan Marker, Michael Woytek and Michael Schum allowed just one run in 4.2 innings, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out four.

Wright State (29-21) and Marshall conclude the series with two seven-inning games on Friday starting at 11 am. The two teams were scheduled to play single games on Friday and Saturday, but have adjusted the schedule due to rain in the forecast.
