Will McAteer scored his first two collegiate goals Saturday night in leading the Wright State men's soccer team to a 3-1 Horizon League win over Loyola at Alumni Field.
The sophomore midfielder opened the scoring at the 11:00 mark of the first half as after a Brian Cothern shot went off the crossbar, McAteer connected off the rebound for the goal. It was Cothern's third assist of the year.
Cothern then made it 2-0 at the 31:08 mark as he drove down nearly the entire length of the field before shooting from just inside the box.
McAteer struck again at the 79:01 mark of the second half as he made a shot from just outside the box to up the lead to 3-0. Goalkeeper Craig Feehan recorded the assist, the first of his career, as his free kick helped set up the play.
Loyola (3-10-1, 1-4 Horizon) broke up the shutout with a goal by Andrew Raymonds at the 81:25 mark, but could get no closer.
"Tonight was a great team win for this program," said head coach Bryan Davis. "Any time you get a league win, it's big. Our boys have lofty goals for themselves, which starts with getting into the conference tournament. We are not there yet, but feel we are playing some great soccer at a crucial time of year."
Wright State (7-5-2, 3-1-1 Horizon) heads to UIC on Wednesday, October 26, for an 8:00 match.
