Wright State rallied back from an early 13-point deficit to lead by three at the half, but shot just 29 percent in the second half as Miami defeated the Raiders 70-63 at Millett Hall Tuesday night.
It was all Miami in the early going as the RedHawks led 19-6 following a Kelsey Simon putback with 11:37 remaining in the first half. WSU, however, followed with seven straight points, including a Breanna Stucke three-pointer.
The margin was nine after another Simon basket until Wright State used a 12-3 run over a 3:38 span to tie the game at 27, a run that included threes from Kayla Lamotte and Courtney Boyd along with two Sarah Hunter jumpers.
The Raiders then took their first lead of the night at 30-29 on another Lamotte triple at the 1:05 mark and maintained that advantage heading into the break as another Hunter basket made it 32-29.
WSU shot 42 percent from the field overall, including 36 percent from behind the arc, in the first half compared to 35 percent overall and 33 percent three-pointers for Miami.
The RedHawks again started off strong in the second half, scoring the first 11 points before Molly Fox hit two foul shots at the 14:44 mark to give Wright State its first points of the period. Those two points also gave Fox 1000 points for her career, becoming the 18th Raider ever to do so.
A Fox layup with 12:38 to play put WSU up 43-42, but Miami's Courtney Osborn followed with a three and the RedHawks gradually built on the lead from there, going up 60-48 on an Osborn foul shot at the 5:41 mark.
The Raiders made another attempt at a comeback, cutting the deficit to five on three different occasions in the final 1:13, but could get no closer as Miami hit all six of its free throw attempts to secure the win.
The RedHawks shot 42 percent over the final 20 minutes to finish at 39 percent overall while WSU shot 29 percent to end the night at 36 percent.
Hunter led the Raiders with 13 off the bench while Fox (11 points, 15 rebounds) and Sandifer (10 points, 11 rebounds) each posted double-doubles. Lamotte added 10 points and seven boards.
Osborn paced all scorers with 27 for Miami (6-3) on 10 for 21 shooting and also had seven rebounds and seven steals. Kirsten Olowinski and Maggie Boyer both had 10.
Wright State (5-4) returns home to begin a five-game homestand Sunday with the Wright State Invitational Presented by Holiday Inn. The Raiders will face Longwood on Sunday (2:00), Southeast Missouri on Monday (Noon) and Central Michigan on Tuesday (Noon).
