Derek Zuniga's penalty kick proved to be the difference as the men's soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 win over Marshall Friday night at the Athletes in Action complex in Xenia.
Marshall was whistled for a yellow card as Zuniga was tackled in the box, setting up the penalty kick at the 54:39 mark of the second half. Zuniga connected to the left to put the Raiders up for good.
In a match that saw the two squads combined for 27 fouls, shots were at a premium as both attempted eight on the night.
"Tonight was a great battle between two good teams," said Raider head coach Bryan Davis. "(Marshall coach) Bob Gray is one of the best coaches in the country and his group provided us a great early season test. I am pleased with the overall effort but we have a ton of things we need to address. We will go back to the drawing board, address them and move on."
"I credit my assistants tonight," added Davis. "They have been outstanding in preseason and each of them has been perfect in their role for the program. I am very fortunate to have the staff I do. A large piece of this win is directly from their efforts."
Wright State hits the road for its next seven matches, starting with a trip to IUPUI on Monday, August 29, at 7:00.
