The Wright State men's soccer team improved to 4-1-1 on the season with a 2-1 victory at Marquette Sunday.
Freshman Justin Laird gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 25:20 mark in the first half as he took advantage of a misplay by the Golden Eagle goalkeeper and scored an open goal. It was his third goal of the season.
The margin grew to 2-0 at the 56:58 mark of the second half as Bryce Rockwell-Ashton recorded his second goal of the year, an eight-yard shot off a pass by Laird, who posted his collegiate assist.
Marquette (1-4) cut the deficit to one with a tally at the 59:45 mark, but could get no closer as the WSU defense held the rest of the way, with goalkeeper Craig Feehan notching six saves altogether in the match.
"Today we played a team that is on the verge of some very big things," said head coach Bryan Davis. "They are extremely well-coached and organized, so we knew we had our work cut out for us."
"I am really proud of the energy and commitment we had today to our identity as a team," added Davis. "I have an awesome group of players and coaches and again this win is attributed to all of the work they do both in training and also off the field where everyone has made a great commitment to improve every day. We now look to prepare for a strong Western Michigan team on Friday."
Wright State (4-1-1) heads to Western Michigan on Friday, September 16, for a 4:00 match.
