
Volleyball Falls in Four to Miami

The Wright State volleyball team won the opening set, but could not maintain the momentum as the Raiders fell to Miami in four sets Tuesday night at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium. The RedHawks won the match 14-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-15.
WSU came out strong in the early going, jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set. Miami cut the margin to 10-7 on a Jenn Caylor kill, but hte Raiders answered with three straight, including a kill and block from Heidi Splinter, and maintained the advantage the rest of the way. Overall, Wright State outhit the RedHawks .333-.048 in the first set, with Alaina McAuley recording six of WSU's 14 kills.
The Raiders then led for much of the second set, going up 21-20 on an Anna Norman kill. Miami, however, tallied three in a row to go in front for good and won on back-to-back kills by Cassie Farrell.
Over the final two sets, the RedHawks hit an impressive ..463 with 29 kills while holding WSU to 19 kills and a .102 hitting percentage.
For the match, Miami had a slight edge in kills (55-47) and outhit Wright State .299-.202.
Splinter posted a double-double of 15 kills and 12 digs to pace the Raiders while McAuley had 10 kills and Mariah Nussbaum eight. Jessica Levy had 13 digs, Brittany Waddell 10 and Ashleigh Lucco recorded 43 assists.
Caylor led Miami (9-2) with 12 kills.
Wright State (1-9) opens Horizon League play on Friday, September 16, by hosting Youngstown State in a 6:00 match.
