Softball Drops 2-1 Decision to Cleveland State

The Wright State softball team won twice in day one of the Charleston Southern Tournament Friday, run-ruling UMBC 8-0 before rallying for a 6-4 win over host Charleston Southern.

The Raider offense came out on fire against UMBC, scoring seven times in the top of the first. After Kristi Boreing scored the first run on a wild pitch, Michelle Baker walked with the bases loaded, Kortney Tackett drove in two with a hit to left center and Reagan Stofcheck followed with a RBI single to center to make it 5-0. The final two runs came in on an error and an infield single by Boreing.

WSU then scored its final run in the fourth as Kate Kine walked with one out and scored on a Kacie Rapshus double to center.

Krystian DeWitt threw five shutout innings for the win, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Offensively, Rapshus and Stofcheck each had three hits while Kine scored twice.

In the second game, it was all Charleston Southern early as the Buccaneers scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings to go up 4-0.

Wright State, though, started its comeback with two in the third. With one out, Chelsea Archer singled to right and advanced to third on a Kine double to right center. Rapshus plated Archer with a hit to left and Kine later scored on a double steal attempt.

The Raiders then completed the rally with four in the sixth. Baker led off with a walk and after Jess Gorman reached on an infield hit, both runners moved up on a Tackett bunt. One out later, Angie Clark delivered a two-run single to tie the game.

An error allowed Clark to score the go-ahead run and WSU added an insurance run as Archer singled in Boreing.

DeWitt (4-4) went the final five innings for the win, retiring all 15 batters she faced with five strikeouts, giving her 13 on the day.

Archer, Gorman and Clark each had two hits for the Raiders.

Wright State (6-5) wraps up tournament play with a pair of games on Saturday, taking on Hampton at 9:00 before playing in the championship game at 3:00.
