The Wright State men's soccer team closed out the regular season on a winning note Friday night by picking up a 3-2 win at San Diego State.
San Diego State is part of the Pac-12 Conference for men's soccer. The Pac-12 currently has the top three teams in the RPI (UCLA, Washington, California) and all six of its members, including the Aztecs, are ranked in the top 100. UCLA, Washington and California are # 2-4 in the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll, just behind top-ranked Notre Dame.
Junior midfielder Bryce Rockwell-Ashton gave the Raiders a quick 1-0 advantage as he connected on a shot 10 yards out on the left side into the right side of the net for his second goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Sam DeRoy and freshman forward Eric Lynch were each credited with an assist, the first of the year for DeRoy and the seventh for Lynch.
The WSU lead grew to 2-0 just 33 seconds into the second half as sophomore midfielder Wesley Cain streaked down the middle and his shot went into the bottom left of the net for his second goal of 2013.
Wright State then went up 3-0 at the 78:52 mark as Lynch knocked in a diagonal shot from the left side for his third goal of the season, with junior defender Gustav Svensson recording his second assist.
San Diego State scored a pair of goals in the final four minutes, including a penalty kick goal, but the Raiders held on for the victory.
The Aztecs outshot the Raiders 30-11, including 11-6 in shots on goal, and led 10-5 in corners, but freshman goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer tallied nine saves.
Wright State (6-9-2) will find out its seed and opponent for next week's Horizon League Tournament as league play concludes on Saturday.
