The offense came alive for the Wright State men's soccer team Saturday night as the Raiders scored two goals in the first half and went on to a 3-1 win over Valparaiso as part of Homecoming at Alumni Field.
Junior forward Eric Lynch opened the scoring for the Raiders at the 29:15 mark of the first half with his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder AJ Paterson then made it 2-0 at the 40:18 mark with his third goal of the year, on an assist by senior midfielder Wes Cain. It was the first assist of the season for Cain.
WSU extended the lead to 3-0 early in the second half at the 49:21 mark as junior forward Marquis Payton scored his first goal of the year, with senior forward Brett Elder notching his first assist of the season.
Valparaiso scored with just seconds remaining to break up the shutout, but junior goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer still finished with five saves for Wright State.
"Tonight's game was a definite team victory," said WSU head coach Bryan Davis. "We got contributions from a lot of places and overall I felt extremely pleased with our performance."
"Valparaiso is a very good team and one of the most athletic teams you will see in college soccer," added Davis. "I thought we matched them well, played a very complete game and finished our chances."
The Raiders led 13-10 in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks.
Wright State (7-3-1, 2-2-1 Horizon) travels to Milwaukee on Saturday, October 17, for an 8:30 Eastern match.
