
Women Pull Away for 77-56 Win Over Austin Peay

Up just two at halftime, the Wright State women's basketball team outscored Austin Peay 46-27 in the second half for a 77-56 win over the Govs Saturday afternoon at Wright State's Nutter Center.
Austin Peay led 10-8 early before JJ Williams scored seven of WSU's final nine points of the opening quarter, including two three-pointers, to give the Raiders a 17-13 edge. The Govs went back in front 28-26 on a Madison Rich three before Wright State closed the half with a 5-1 run, three of those by Kim Demmings, to take a 31-29 lead at halftime.
Austin Peay shot 37 percent from the field in the first half, including five of 13 from three-point range, while the Raiders shot just 30 percent altogether and were three of 14 from behind the arc.
A 7-0 burst, the final five from Demmings, gave WSU the lead for good at 40-33 midway through the third quarter and the margin reached double figures at 48-37 on two foul shots by the senior guard at the 3:27 mark of the period. Demmings scored 14 points overall in the quarter as Wright State built a 56-42 advantage heading into the final period.
The Raiders gradually expanded the margin in the fourth quarter, leading by as much as 77-54 with two minutes to play.
WSU shot 45 percent in the second half, including five of 11 three-pointers, to finish at 37 percent overall while the Govs shot just 27 percent the final two quarters overall and missed all 10 of their three-point attempts. Wright State led in points in the paint (36-22), points off of turnovers (17-6), second-chance points (19-13).
Demmings was the only Raider to reach double figures in scoring as she had 24 points, but four added nine points each in Antania Hayes, Emily Vogelpohl, Williams and Mackenzie Taylor. Hayes nearly posted a double-double as she collected 11 rebounds while Demmings and Lexi Smith had eight a piece.
Wright State (3-1) wraps up the three games in five days homestand on Monday, hosting Southeastern Louisiana at 7:00.
