The Wright State softball team pounded out 27 runs and 25 hits in just 10 innings at the plate Tuesday afternoon in sweeping its home opening doubleheader with Ohio, defeating the Bobcats 20-3 in the opener and 7-2 in the nightcap.
Ohio opened the scoring in game one with three runs in the first, only to see the Raiders answer with nine in the bottom of the inning, all coming after the first two batters were retired. Libby Pfeffer was hit by a pitch to start the rally and after Kortney Tackett was also hit by a pitch, Reagan Stofcheck drove in the first run with a hit up the middle.
A Hanna Floyd hit by pitch and Becka Peterson walk made it 3-2 and Angie Clark followed with a bases-clearing double to right to give WSU the lead for good. After walks to Alexis Mayle and and Macey Gunther reloaded the bases, Jess Gorman delivered the big blow with a grand slam home run to right center, her third of the season.
Clark made it 11-3 with a two-run double in the second, but the Raiders weren't through with the big inning as they again scored nine, this time in the fourth, marking the third time Wright State had scored nine runs in an inning over the past five games (WSU scored nine in the seventh in a 16-4 win over IPFW on March 14).
Gunther had a two-run double and Peterson a two-run single to highlight the inning.
The 20 runs and the margin of victory were the most by Wright State in a game since winning 18-1 over North Carolina A&T at the Elon Phoenix Classic on March 10, 2002.
After giving up three runs in the first, pitcher Montana Wear (3-10) shutout Ohio over the final four innings to pick up the win.
Offensively, Clark finished four for four with seven RBI while Gorman had two hits in driving in five and Peterson two hits in plating three. Pfeffer and Stofcheck also added two hits.
The Raiders carried that momentum into the second game, scoring three times in the first, two coming on a Stofcheck double. Wright State tacked on three more in the fourth, highlighted by a Gorman two-run double, and an unearned run in the fifth.
Ashley Sharp (1-7) earned her first collegiate win with a complete-game effort, striking out five.
Stofcheck and Gorman each had three hits and two RBI in the second game while Gunther had two hits.
Wright State (4-17) begins Horizon League play this weekend as the Raiders host Cleveland State in a three-game series at the WSU Softball Field. The series was originally schedule to be played in Cleveland, but has been moved due to wet conditions at Viking Field. WSU and CSU will play a single game on Friday, March 20, at 4:00, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 21, at 1:00.
