Softball Falls Twice in First Day of CSU Tournament

The Wright State softball team dropped a pair of games in the opening day of the CSU Tournament Friday, falling 3-1 to Jacksonville State and 6-2 to host Charleston Southern.

In the first game of the day, Jacksonville State scored a run in the second, only to see the Raiders tie it with a run of their own in the third. With one out, Jess Gorman was hit by a pitch and advanced all the way to third as Ashton Salyers laid down a sacrifice bunt. Libby Pfeffer then delivered a single up the middle to plate Gorman.

The Gamecocks, however, regained the lead with a run in the fourth and added an insurance run in the fifth. WSU had two runners in scoring position in the sixth and had the bases loaded in the seventh, but could not cut into the deficit.

Kortney Tackett led Wright State with two hits while in the circle, Montana Wear struck out four in a complete-game effort.

In the second game, Charleston Southern took the early lead with a run in the first, added another in the third and then broke the game open with four in the fourth.

The Raiders scored both of their runs in the fifth. With one out, Angie Clark doubled to right center and went to third on a Salyers ground out. A Macey Gunther hit to center drove in Clark and Gunther later scored as she stole second and came in to score as Gorman reached on an error.

Wright State (0-13) wraps up tournament play on Saturday morning as the Raiders face Iona at 9:00 followed by Jacksonville State at 11:00.
